Education and Training

The UAB Center for Glial Biology in Medicine trains researchers for a career in the emerging field of glial biology. Training opportunities are available for students, post-doctoral fellows, and faculty. By providing trainees with unique access to transgenic model systems and unique core services, they are well equipped to pursue novel research into aspects of glial biology relevant to disease processes. The Center maintains a weekly journal club on glial biology and a monthly seminar series with prominent glial biologists from around the world. The Center also plans to host a bi-annual international conference on glial biology and its relevance to brain function, development and neurological disease.

Journals which contain particularly significant contributions on glial research:

  • GLIA (the "mother" journal with broadest thematic coverage)

  • J. Neuroscience (always contains at least one or two glial articles)

  • J. Neuroscience Research (popular journal for glial articles with broad topics)

  • J. Neurophysiology (primarily articles on glial physiology)

  • Neuron-Glia Biology (young journal with broad focus on glial neuronal interactions)

  • J. Developmental Neuroscience (primarily articles on Glia and development

  • Development

  • J. Biological Chemistry (like J. Neurosci. often contains a couple of glial articles)

  • J. Neurochemistry (many articles on myelin, oligiodendrocytes but also transporters)

  • Nature Neuroscience (recent breakthrough in glial research)
